Abstract

This study ascertained perception of academics towards reward systems in selected universities in Delta State. The study also determined the influence of demographic attributes on academics’ perception of reward systems in selected universities in Delta State. Cross-sectional survey research design was employed in this study. The population of this study is made up of academic staff of Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun, Delta State and Novena University, Ogume, also of Delta State. The total population of academics in the two institutions as at the time of this study was 448. A sample of 215 was taken. The study used primary data that were sourced from carefully designed questionnaire. Both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were undertaken in this study. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0 software was used to conduct the necessary analysis at 5% level of significance. The study found that the perception of academics towards reward system in the selected universities is low. The study also found that the perception of academics towards reward systems in public university is higher than their counterparts in private university. The study recommends that university management should channel more resources to areas such as sponsorship of research works and welfare packages to motivate employees to put in their best in any responsibility assigned to them.
