Introduction: This study contributes to the governance debate in the Nigerian health sector by presenting data set that allows comparisons of the management of the health resources in Nigeria. Nigeria operates a 3-tire health structure with the primary health care (PHC) at the local government levels, secondary health care (SHC) at the state while the tertiary health care (THC) at the federal level.
Objectives: To determine the relationship between the governance indicators and the dynamics of health care delivery in Nigeria.
Methods: The study employed the descriptive and causal research design. Data were collected from WHO, WGI and CBN statistical bulletin for 2000 to 2014. The study deepens understanding of the relationship between health governance and the extent to which vertical health accountability contributes to reducing the propensity of government official to divert public health resource for private use.
Results: The results of the multiple regression analysis revealed that corruption and mis-management are major contributors to the increase in the number deaths in communicable and non-communicable diseases in Nigeria.
Discussion and Conclusion: Based on the results, we provide recommendations that can assist policy makers to reduce corruption and enhance the health care performance and sustainability in Nigeria.
